<<05.25.03 7:54>> This appeared in my paper today; a typical conversation between two Minnesotans out fishing. Now, this is actually how a vast majority of Midwesterners speak, not to this extreme, usually, but do consider that when I read it I understood every word [and laughed, because of how true it was]. We're an odd bunch, us Midwesterners. Fortunately I don't speak like this all the time because my Noweigen blood [barely any] is outwieghed by my German blood [stubborn bastards], my Swiss blood [tricky bastards] and Slavic blood [?????]. Anyways, the bit read as follows: Ven Two Minnesotans Meet -- oop nort on da lake fichen. "Haydair." "Lobuddy." "Benearlong?" "Coplhours." "Ohfordacriepsakes, cetchenenny?" "Yepgoddafew." "Vairdaybitin?" "Oberdair." "Kindarday?" "Valleyennorden." "Enysiztooum?" "Cuplapowns." "Oofda, bittnard?" "Yanohodeyar." "Vachaoozin? Dalindyrik?"* "Ohyeahdonchano." "Fichennondaboddum?" "Rydonneardaboddum." "Howdeeperya?" "Bouttventyfeet." "Oh, vachadrinkin?" "Hadacouplabeers." "Velligoddago." "Tubad." "Seeyaround." "Yeahtakideeze." "Guluck." "Yoobetcha." *The "Dalindyrik" is the only part I didn't understand, most likely because it's a fishing term [some sort of bait or lure] that thankfully I don't know because I don't fish. Either way, if you understood the conversation, you would fit quite nicely into Minnesota. ***** If you didn't understand a word of that, here is a helpful traslation; When Two Minnesotas Meet -- up north on the lake fishing "Hey there" "Hello, buddy." "Been here long?" "A couple of hours." "Oh for christ's sake, did you catch any?" "Yup, I got a few." "Where are they biting?" "Over there." "What kind are they?" "Walley and Northern." "Is there any size to them?" "A couple of pounds." "Oofda, are they biting hard?" "Yeah in how they are!?" "What are you using? Dalindyrik [DAMN YOU WORD I DON'T KNOW!!]" "Oh yeah, don't you know it." "Are you fishing on the bottom?" "Right down near the bottom." "How deep are you?" "About twenty feet." "Oh, what are you drinking?" "I had a couple of beers." "Well, I gotta go." "Too bad." "See you around." "Yeah, take it easy." "Good luck." "You betcha." To see more Minnesotanish/Midwesternish in action, watch either Fargo, Grumpy Old Men, or Drop Dead Gorgeous. and yeah....er...thats it... shuu - - This is the way we skip and skip, lalala, lalala - THE JUSTICE HOLE; STANDBY FOR SUPER CREDITS - |
